When it comes to cleaning the house, there's one item that's usually overlooked – the mattress. If you can't remember the last time your mattress was cleaned, it's been too long. There are a couple of reasons why you should keep your mattress clean. One, it will help your mattress last longer. Two, it will get rid of the dust mites and odors that might be lurking in the fibers. Here are some simple steps you can take to keep your mattress clean.

Use a Cover

Your mattress takes a lot of abuse. You can help keep it looking new by sealing it in a washable mattress cover. The cover will protect your mattress and help keep it clean. To keep the cover clean, remove it once a month and wash it in hot water. Add 1 cup of bleach to the water to kill germs and dust mites.

Vacuum Thoroughly

Things like dust mites, dirt, and dead skin cells can get trapped in the fibers of your mattress. You can get rid of those things by vacuuming your mattress at least once a month. Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda over the surface of your mattress, then vacuum the entire surface of your mattress. Be sure to run your vacuum across your mattress in horizontal and vertical lines to reach all the spaces that dirt and dust mites could be hiding.

Flip it

When you sleep, you apply constant pressure to the padding inside your mattress. Over time, the padding can lose its shape and durability. You can extend the life of your mattress padding by flipping your mattress twice a month. For non-pillow top mattresses, flip them over from top-to-bottom and from end-to-end.

This will ensure that you aren't sleeping on the same area of the mattress for too long. If you have a pillow-top mattress, you won't be able to flip it from top to bottom. Instead, you'll simply rotate it from head-to-foot twice a month.

Disinfect it weekly

Germs and body odors can leave your mattress smelling less than fresh. You can get rid of the odors and kill the germs by disinfecting your mattress once a week. Fill a spray bottle with water. Add ¼ cup of bleach and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Remove the sheets and spray your mattress with the solution. Allow your mattress to air dry.

You want your home to be as clean as possible. Be sure to add your mattress to your list of household chores. These simple steps will help keep your mattress clean and fresh.
